Who am I and What I do?

My name is Gabor Borics. I’m a hydro-biologist. I work for an environmental protection inspectorate in Hungary.

Career journey

At the university (between 1986 an 1991) I was engaged in the aquatic macrophytes and the evolution of the eutrophic peatbogs. After getting my degree I started working at my present workplace (at an environmental laboratory). My task is the qualification of surface waters by the microscopic organisms. After having proper experience in the identification of algae I joined several scientific programs. In 1994 I started studying for my Ph.D. I got my degree in 2001.

What made you study science?

I was six years old when I decided to become biologist. I grew up in a small village in east Hungary. One of the earliest pictures in my life that I can remember is the picture of the scarlet bugs whom were walking on the pavement of our house. Watching them was my favourite activity. Later, my father who was an agriculturist always took me to the countryside to see the birds, rabbits and bugs. My love for nature hasn’t changed since then. As a biologist I am faced with scientific problems that are much more pleasant for me than the personal conflicts that frequently arise in other fields of life.

Family, hobbies, interests, etc.

I have been married for 11 years. My wife is Gabriella. We have two children Fanni age 8, and Peter 5. Both of them have very good sense of humour. My favourite activities are those that we can do together, biking, canoeing or swimming. Unfortunately we have only few time for recreation nowadays because we are just in the middle of a house building.

Parting words for students or teachers

Lot of children can hear from their parents that they have to study hard, because the knowledge is power, or the knowledge is a tool, by which they can apply for well paid jobs more successfully. I think next to this pragmatic approach there is a more important aspect of that. If we study we will find a more colourful and diverse world around us. So the knowledge is not only a tool for a carrier but one of the essences of Life.
