Who I am and what I Do

My name is Eva Acs, I am working as a senior scientist at the Hungarian Danube Research Station of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. My profession is hydrobiology, phycology (algological investigation). I deal with types of algae associated with rivers and lakes.

Career Journey

From 1982-1987 I was a student in the L. Eotvos University (Budapest), on the faculty of biology. In 1991 I became a doctor in hydrobiology (it`s equivalent to an MS degree) and in 1997 I got PhD degree.

Growing up

I was born in Budapest, the capital of Hungary. The area of Budapest, where I grew up is like a nice village.

What made you study science?

I was eleven years old when I collected some caterpillars and I studied how they develop, and how they became butterflies. I drew them and I noticed their development. Later I captured some tadpoles and I also studied how they developed into frogs. When I was 13, my friends and I decided together that we would teach a biological course to other children in our school. We invited some specialist, too and I met an ornithologist and invited him to this course. He invited me to join to the Hungarian Ornithological Society, and I did it and I spent many times in bird ringing camps. When I was 16, I take an exam to learn how to ring the birds. When I was 17, I started to investigate algae, too, because I wanted to know something about the water quality and algae are good indicators of the clearness of waters. Because I liked nature, I wanted to do something for the nature conservation, so I decided to become a biologist to “serve” nature.

Family, hobbies, interests, etc.

I have been married for 17years. My husband Attila, is an ophthalmologist. We have one child Domonkos age 10. He likes sports. I like swimming, music and painting.

Parting words for students or teachers

We have to learn to live together with nature, and conserve it for our children, because to hear the song of birds, the smell of the Earth after rain, to see the light of fire are the roots of humanity. And without roots the trees are also incapable of living.
