After arriving to the Refuge and finishing the equipment organization, our friends began their scientific research.

The first task was to study the area around the Refuge. They visited Laguna Blanca, Laguna Verde and they noticed a lot of interesting things.

"This is very nice, the Lagunas are very big" - said GB
"They are like a small sea in the desert" - added Pup.

They saw the different plants and animals that live in the Lagunas and the contrasting colors of the desert: brown, light blue, red, aqua, yellow, green, pink, and white.

"The colors change during all day, some of them viewed in the morning change by the afternoon" - Claimed Pup.

Bongo and GB helped to recognize the different mountain formations; Pup was helping to take samples of water from the Lagunas and Leo was attentively looking at the Licancabur Volcano thinking about the climbing ahead.

All woke up on the second science day very excited to keep working. They used the instruments at the refuge to study plankton, the food of the flamingos and other birds of the Lagunas.

Q1: What colors did our friends see in the desert?
Q2: What is the food of the flamingos?
Q3: Can you name a bird living in your area?

An Adventure in the Desert

En Espanol. After a good rest, our friends GB, Pup, Leo and Bongo woke up early to see the little town of San Pedro de Atacama which really is an oasis in the middle of Atacama Desert.

GB went to see the Church, Leo went to the museum of the town, and Bongo and Pup took a bicycle ride trough the narrow streets of the town.

"It's great" they said while they were pedaling faster on their bikes.

After noon they decided to see the surrounding area of the town. They took a tour bus, just for them, where they met Feo, the tour guide, and they left for the desert.  The first place they saw was Death Valley, so named because nothing grows there.  No insects, flowers, trees or birds.  They could only find sand, clay and salt.

"This place scares me!" said Bongo; "I would never live here" said Leo.  For GB and Pup the place was not so bad at all "Is a wanderfull and interesting landscape" they said together.

Later they went to see places like the Valley of the Moon and Dinosaur Valley. These are giant clay and rock formations that look like the surface of the Moon and lines of dinosaurs walking together.

They also liked the Salars, where you can find Salt mines, statues, minerals and lots of tourists taking pictures of the salt mountains.  What they liked the most was the sunset and the twilight...they had to climb a difficult sand dune to get a great view of the sun becoming lost in the distance.  It was around 8:00 p.m.  "I will dream of this sunset," said GB; "I will never forget it," said Leo, and all of the friends agreed.

By the end of the day, during the night, they remembered that yesterday was Halloween.  Different from the United States, this holiday is not celebrated in Bolivia and Chile.  They still found a way to get some candy from the expedition supplies...

Questions:
1. Why is the first place they visited called "Death Valley"?
2. What part of the tour did they like best?
3. What is an oasis?

2. Que les gusto mas del paseo?
3. Sabes los quie es un oasis?
