Nov. 1st, 2002

Brian Grigsby

11-01-02—Today as we prepared to climb the mountain, many science activities took place:

STROMATOLITES: (Nathalie, Edmond, and David)—Overall we took measurements of the stromatalites; most have about the same height, no matter where you are in the field. This field of stromatalites is at least 100 square Km, and I wouldn’t be surprised if it were bigger than that. The structures vary in all sorts of shapes. From domes to columns to mushroom shapes, we have found four or more types here. It is a very interesting find. The placement of these types suggests that it looks like they are related to the environment in which they occur. But this is just one possibility.

MARVIN (Marc and Christian)—we worked on replacing one of the motors today and we worked on the axle as well to prepare for some field tests.

LAGUNA BLANCA SAMPLES (Andy and Lorena)—we discovered small thermal upwellings and the color distribution of the springs is like Grand Prismatic springs in the US. The importance of this is that anywhere there is green in the Lagunas, this indicates some sort of upwelling. This would indicate Carbon Dioxide rich water. The area is rich with geothermal activity.
