The Expedition is taking place between October
16th and November 9th, 2002.

Travel to Chile for 14+ hours. Arrive
in Antofagasta, Chile with the rest of the
team. |
| October 18th-19th |
Gather supplies in Antofagasta, arrange
travel to San Pedro. |
| October 20th |
Finalize supplies in San Pedro (2380
m). Morning out for team. Spend the night
in Altiplano (camp) at mid-altitude. |
| October 21st-22nd |
Oct 21st arrive at the refuge (4145
m), set up base camp. Tour of the Lagunas
with science activities. Reconnaissance
of the area. Oct 22nd, full day of science
at the Lagunas. |
| October 23rd |
Morning training. Hike Juriquès
up to 5000m (16,250 feet), Afternoon of
light science tasks in the Lagunas. |
| October 24th |
Day of science at the Lagunas. Team
B visits. |
| October 25th |
All day training on Licancabur as high
as time permits. Test communication and
rescue procedures. |
October 26th |
Team A rest day. Possible tour of Laguna
Colorada/Celeste. |
October 27th |
Refuge—Inca City (Licancabur Base
Camp). Day of Science. Team B visits. Team
A sleeps at Inca City—4520m (14,690
feet). |
October 28th |
Acclimatization on Licancabur. Sleep
at Inca City. The other option is not to
come back down and sleep on slope between
(5200-5400 m) |
October 29-30th |
Day hike up on Licancabur. Sleep on slopes.
2nd day, hike to highest point on Licancabur
in preparation to head to the crater. Following
second option, we would arrive at the summit
that day. |
October 31st |
Hike to summit of Licancabur or start
to work if team at summit (5916 m). Sleep
in the crater. |
November 1st |
All day science at the summit lake. Sleep
at summit lake. |
November 2nd |
Morning science tasks. Break camp and
descend in the afternoon. Sleep at refuge. |
November 3rd |
Science at the Lagunas. Transport samples
to Team B. |
November 4th |
Full day of science at the Lagunas. |
November 5-9th |
Pack, debrief, and travel back to states. |
